Indira Abwas Yojana (I.A.Y) is a welfare initiative by the government of India to provide homes to homeless people below the Poverty Line (BPL) category.
Concept of Planning
For a 20 sq. meter single story house the planning would be as following:
- Depth of foundation is 500 mm from lowest ground level of the site.
- Total plinth area considered: 20 sq. meters within which a verandah of 1.53 sq. meters, a multipurpose room of 6.05 sq. meters, a bed room of 6.05 sq. meters, a latrine of 1.48 sq. meters, and a kitchen of 1.66 sq. meters are included.
- Plinth height is 300 mm.
- Type of Foundation: Stub Arch Linking Foundation.
- 17nos of footing are considered to bear the total load; area of each footing is 0.25 sq. meters.
- Walls are made of 120 mm thick fly-ash brick where (230 X 230 mm) posts are also provided.
- Height of ceiling is 2650 mm proportionate from floor to ceiling.
- Roof is made of precast shell units which are supported over RCC ribs, and finally a 40mm thick screed concrete is applied over the precast shell & rib.
- The shelter is made in accordance with a day lighting system.
- Doors are made of fiber cement sheets.
- The house should have a smokeless chullha (oven) in the kitchen, which should be convenient to use, fuel-efficient and smoke free for a healthy and clean environment.
