• Aerating is simply penetrating the soil over the grass roots to allow food, water, oxygen and chemical controls to get to the area that needs them most – the roots. Golf shoes are the simplest form of aeration, and you should wear them whenever you are working in your garden. Aerating sandals are also available, or you can rent a power aerator from your local garden center.
  • Mow in the evening, after 6 p.m., to prevent sunscald and to allow the ends enough time to recover before the dry, hot breezes begin again. Also alter your cutting pattern for a more attractive effect.
  • Snack tonic gets your lawn up and growing in both spring and fall when you need aggressive root action and thatch breakdown. Apply the tonic with your 20 gal. hose-end sprayer after your first application of dry lawn food in spring, and last application in fall.
  • Snack Tonic -1 can of beer, 1-cup liquid dish soap or baby shampoo, fill the balance of the sprayer jar with ammonia.
  • To get rid of mushrooms growing on your lawn, puncture the turf with your aerating lawn sandals or golf shoes, then apply any dry laundry soap from your hand held broadcast spreader on a #3 setting. Water the soap in well.
